Lenovo ThinkStation P700 Workstation

Description

Lenovo's ThinkStation P700 workstation is highly adaptable to your changing needs. The system supports several options and is a breeze to upgrade using the tool-less, red-marked touch points found throughout the case. The Lenovo P700 is a mid-range workstation but still offers plenty of performance with an impressive storage and memory capacity, coupled with a generous number of PCI slots to support external devices. Built-in handles on the sturdy industrial case help you move the system to another location or take it home for the evening.

ISV Certification

The Lenovo P700 is ISV certified to perform effortlessly running intensive software applications used by design engineers, financial analysts, and geologists. ISV is an acronym for Independent Software Vendor and means these independent software vendors have tested the software, hardware, and components to ensure stable and reliable performance.

Performance

Choose between the Intel Xeon E5-1600 v3 and E5-2600 v3 family of processors to outfit your system. The system will support one of either Intel Xeon family but if you plan on upgrading to dual processors only the Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 product family is supported.

Memory

The P700 can handle up to 769GB of DDR4 memory using 64GB memory modules. UDIMM, RDIMM, and LRDIMM memory modules can be installed and, depending on your choice of processor, supports memory speeds of up to 2133MHz.

Storage

The HD bays inside the side cover can support either one 3.5-inch drive each for a total of four, or a 3.5-inch drive and a 2.5-inch SATA/SAS SSD, or two 2.5-inch drives each for a total of eight drives. The 5.25-inch media bays also supports several options including up to two optional HDD bays using an optional media bay adapter. The 5.25-inch bays will also support a 29-in-one media card reader, additional DVD drive, slimline optical drive, and Firewire. The system will support up to six 3.5-inch HDs, or 10 2.5-inch drives, and a maximum of two M.2 PCIe SSDs. The M.2 drives can be used in conjunction with the 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives. Storage capacity is dependent on currently available storage medium capacities.

Expansion

There are 12 USB ports total both front and rear. Four 3.0 and four 2.0 in the back of the system and four 3.0 ports in front. You'll also find two 1GB Ethernet ports, and two old school PS/2 ports in back. With three x16 PCIe slots, Lenovo claims this system features more x16 slots than any other two processor workstation. There are six PCI slots, four 3.0 and two 2.0 slots, plus a flex connector expansion slot. In addition to the three x16 slots there's; a single x8, a single x4, a legacy slot. Of course, for all of the slots to be active requires two processors. There are also several options for graphics cards, and the system will support up to two full width GPUs. Choose from either a 650W or 850W power supply.

Management

Lenovo's Performance Tuner helps to manage the system and Lenovo Mobile Diagnostics helps to track system health and can be accessed from one of the dedicated ports on the front of the system using an Android device outfitted with Lenovo's mobile app.

Summary

The acoustics on the system are very quiet, but again a liquid cooling solution will take it down a notch if noise is an issue. This is a powerful and highly adaptable workstation with very impressive performance and an abundance of storage. It also supports more memory, expansion slots and USB ports than you'll have a use for unless you're a super-user or like lots of monitors.
