Dell PowerEdge R930 Gen13 - System Overview


The Dell PowerEdge R930 Gen13 offers high reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) for traditional mission critical services and provides high-level support for High-Performance Computing (HPC), ERP, CRM, accounting, sales and HR. With the dense memory offered by the R930, in-memory data base applications like SAP HANA are easily supported providing real-time in memory analytics for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), and Online Analytical Processing. The R930 is also an excellent choice for High-Performance Computing (HPC) applications.


This system supports the C602J chipset and up to four Intel Xeon E7-8800 or E7-4800 v4 processors, which offer more cores and greater memory bandwidth when compared to v3 CPUs. Four to 24 cores are available, depending on the choice of processor, for up to 96 total cores with four top-end processors installed. More cores means more processing power and support for more virtual partitions.


Eight memory card risers are located behind the drive bays. Each riser holds twelve DDR3 or DDR4 RDIMM or LRDIMM memory modules. In a four processor configuration with all 96 slots loaded with 64GB DDR4 memory modules, up to 6TB of memory is available. Using 128GB modules expect that number to increase to 12TB! While both DDR3 and DDR4 memory modules are supported, they cannot be mixed.


There are three basic chassis configurations with the R930. One that supports up to 24 front-mounted 2.5-inch drives. Another with four 2.5-inch drives, and another that supports tiered storage with a combination of up to sixteen 2.5-inch drives paired with 8 NVMe PCIe 2.5-inch SSDs. The various configurations support SAS, SATA, or Nearline SAS 2.5-inch HDDs and SSDs. NAND SSDs offer a significant improvement over standard hard drives. With two daughter cards installed on the system, two PERC 9 RAID controllers can be installed to maximize I/O.


Up to ten PCIe 3.0 slots are available with all four processors active and optional left and right PCIe risers installed. The PCIe slots offer alternatives for more NICs, HD controllers or converged network adapters for increased I/O or direct attached storage. The system also supports two daughter cards which can be used for additional RAID controllers as described above or for a flexible LOM. An optional internal Dual SD module provides redundant failover for the hypervisor when used in mirror mode.


The system comes standard with iDRAC8 Express for out of band and remote management without the need to install additional software. Administrators can easily upgrade to Enterprise by purchasing an upgrade license key. Upgrading to Enterprise will also activate the front-mounted iDRAC sd card slot and dedicated iDRAC port. OpenManage Essentials leverages the embedded iDRAC8 module with Lifecycle controller to simplify and automate common server lifecycle management tasks. Open manage also includes Server Configuration Management capabilities to automate configuration and deployment of bare metal servers.

The R930 excels at high performance computing featuring accessible high-density memory for virtualization and demanding applications. With support for up to 24 2.5-inch hard drives and 6TB of memory the R930 is also a natural for hosting in-memory storage and data base applications.
