The Dell EMC PowerEdge R940xa offers support for up to four CPUs and up to 32 front-mounted hard drives. This platform also offers double the GPU support with room for up to four GPUs compared to the PowerEdge R940, which only supports two GPUS. This system can also handle up to eight field-programable gate arrays (FPGA) in lieu of GPUs.
This system is designed to make quick work of complex database and analytics data sets, compute-intensive applications, and for machine learning. The Dell EMC PowerEdge R940xa server offers extreme GPU database acceleration with four processor performance and up to 6TB of memory for in-memory database applications. Optional FPGA modules provide a programmable option for data analysis of complex parallel workloads. With room for up to 32 front mounted drives, this system will also dynamically scale as your business grows. Keep in mind, the R940xa is substantially different from the PowerEdge R940 server, which is a 3U system that only supports a maximum of two GPUS, and features a separate CPU mezzanine for processors 3 and 4. On the R940xa you get a 1:1 relationship of processor to GPU.
You can install two or four Intel Xeon Scalable processors for up to 112 cores using either first or second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Both first and second-generation processors support up to 6TB of memory with CPUs that have an “M” suffix. Gen 2 Intel Xeon Scalable processors also support memory speeds of up to 2933MHz compared to Gen 1 CPUs that support a top speed of 2666MHz. Certain Gold and Platinum processors also support 3 UPI channels for improved inter-CPU communication.
Memory speed is dependent on both the speed of your memory modules and the speed of the memory supported on your choice of CPU, defaulting to the slowest performer of the two. There are 48 memory module slots total with each processor supporting twelve memory modules slots with two modules in each memory channel. Memory types supported include Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced, (LRDIMM) and up to 12x NVDIMM modules. The system will support a total of 6TB using Load-Reduced 128GB memory modules in all 48 slots.
The Dell EMC R940xa server supports a few standard configurations include 8x 2.5-inch drives, 24x 2.5-inch drives or up to 32x 2.5-inch SAS or SATA HDD or SSD drives total, including up to four direct attached NVMe storage devices. Internal storage controllers supported on this system include the H730P, H740P, and H330 plus software RAID provided by the integrated S140 controller. A boot optimized storage subsystem can be used to support the OS and includes one or two M.2 read-intensive boot-class M.2 SATA drives in either pass-thru mode or mirror mode. The BOSS is ideal for hyper-converged infrastructures and software defined storage offering an alternative to using your upfront storage to support the OS.
Outfitted with four processors, this system supports up to 12x Gen3 expansion slots. Depending on your choice of risers you can have either (6) x16 electrical slots or (2) x16 electrical slots plus (10) x8 electrical slots. A dedicated slot at the back of the system provides options for a Network Daughter Card providing several options for network communications including, 4 x 1GbE, 4 x 10GbE, 2 x 10GbE+2 x 1GbE, or 2 x 25GbE.
The integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) Direct can be accessed at the back of the system with a dedicated micro-USB port. It provides out-of-band access to the system both at chassis and remotely. At chassis management can be provided either by the optional Quick-Sync2.0 bezel which uses a bluetooth connection to access the system, or through a standard crash cart with monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Also supported is Dell’s OpenManage Enterprise and Essentials which provide one to many server management including third-party hardware, for datacenter and enterprise businesses.
The Dell EMC PowerEdge R940xa server delivers some very impressive performance with up to four processors, 6TB of memory, and generous upfront storage. With room for up to four high-perforamnce GPUs from Nvidia, this platform is designed for high-performance computing, machine learning, analytics, and database applications offering a 1:1 CPU to GPU ratio.
