Supermicro Ultra SuperServer 520P-WTR

Description

The Supermicro SuperServer 520P-WTR packs tons of hardware into its 2U Rackmount chassis, featuring a single 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPU with up to 40 cores and 8x memory module slots with memory speeds up to 3200MHz. The server also supports the latest technology including Intel’s PMem and PCIe 4.0 slots for twice the throughput (16GT/s) compared to PCIe 3.0 (8GT/s). This server platform is optimized for data centers, database processing and storage, and for use as a general network appliance.

Performance

The single 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable “Ice Lake” processor packs up to 40 cores 80 threads onto the X12 motherboard with a TDP of up to 270W. The CPU powers 8x memory channels for 8x memory module slots and up to 3TB of memory when using the latest Intel Optane persistent 200 series memory. That’s two more memory channels compared to Intel’s 2nd Gen Xeon processors at only 6x memory channels. The system also features an ample amount of storage options including front and rear drive bays, plus an M.2 slot.

Memory

Under the hood, the Supermicro 520P-WTR supports up to 2,048GB of ECC RDIMM, LRDIMM, RDIMM 3DS, and LRDIMM 3DS with speeds of up to 3200MHz in 8x memory module slots. Mixed DIMM speeds can be installed, but all DIMMs will run at the speed of the slowest DIMM. When 4x DRAM modules and 4x Intel Optane persistent 200 series (PMem) memory modules are installed, the server allows for 3TB of memory. PMem is Intel’s next-gen security enabled, reliable, persistent memory module which provides large capacity and native persistence to help extract more value from larger datasets and with less latency.

Storage

The system features several storage options for businesses with a need for fast storage including front and rear drive bays, plus an M.2 slot on the motherboard. The front of the SYS-520P-WTR shows off the 8x hot-swap 3.5” SATA drive bays, while the rear of the chassis offers 2x additional drive bays for 2.5” NVMe storage bays. More storage options are available on the motherboard including two SuperDOM (Disk on Module) ports with built-in power for support of the OS, a hypervisor or for additional storage. The motherboard also allows for a single M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 SATA SSD card in the 2280 and 22110 form factors.

Expansion

On the rear of the system, there are two PCIe 4.0 x8 low profile slots, two PCIe 4.0 x16 full-height, full-length slots, two RJ45 10GbE LAN ports, and a single dedicated IPMI LAN port. As mentioned in the section above, the SuperServer SYS-520P-WTR also supports an onboard NVMe/SATA M.2 slot to support the OS.

Management

Remote management and monitoring are offered through Supermicro’s latest integrated Intelligent Platform Management Controller (IMPI 2.0). Administrators are able to see a detailed overview of the server’s status, power consumption, and recent log events both at-chassis and remotely. Other management programs include: SuperDoctor 5 (SD5), Intel Node Manager, Supermicro Server Manager (SSM), and Redfish API.
