Dell EMC PowerEdge C4140 Server - System Overview

Description

Dell C4140 server front of system

This is a unique platform that supports up to four double-wide GPU accelerators from Nvidia including the Tesla P40 and P100. Outfitted with dual processors, the Dell EMC PowerEdge C6140 server can support up to 1.5TB of memory. An internal dual SD card module is optional and provides super-fast boot. Given the speed of this appliance, you have many options for fast network connection speeds, including an Omni-Path host fabric adapter card supporting network connection speeds of up to 100Gb/s. The system is powered by either one or two Platinum 2000W or 2400W PSUs.

Performance

Two Intel Xeon Scalable processors are supported on this system with up to 20 cores per processor. It also supports four GPUs with NVlink technology for even greater GPU performance. Each processor supports 6 memory channels with 12 memory sockets per processor, for a total of 24 memory module sockets with two CPUs.

Memory

With dual processors the system will support a maximum of 1.5TB of memory using either Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) or Registered (RDIMM) memory modules operating at up to 2933MT/s.

Storage

Storage is light on the Dell C4140 server with two M.2 storage modules that can be installed on a Boot Optimized Storage Sub-system or BOSS which installs in slot 2. Two more optional drives can be installed only in PSU bay 2, which will also disable redundancy with only a single PSU installed. Another option is to install additional M.2 NVMe PCIe cards in two slots but that will affect the number of GPUs supported. A Dell PERC H840 external storage controller is supported.

Expansion

With no storage to speak of, aside from the Boot Optimized Storage Subsystem for your OS and the two drives that can go in the PSU bay 2, you can also install two NVMe PCIe add-in cards using slots 1 and 3. Although, with the NVMe storage cards you can only install a maximum of 2x double-wide GPUs. External storage is supported with the addition of a PERC H840. Or a 12Gb/s SAS HBA.

Management

Management of the system is through the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9.0 or iDRAC9 which comes standard on all Dell next-gen servers. The companion to iDRAC is the Lifecycle Controller, which helps manage the system over its lifecycle. Dell’s OpenManage systems portfolio leverages iDRAC to provide automation of simple administrative tasks plus monitoring of various systems and can be configured to provide alerts both local and remotely. Dell servers have a cyber-resilient architecture with security features built right into the silicon and maintains data security with cryptographically signed firmware.

Summary

The Dell EMC PowerEdge C4140 Server is a very capable high-performance server for high-performance computing! There are only a handful of 1U servers that can support 4x GPUs and the C4140 takes it a step further with support for optional NVlink to increase GPU performance. With 100Gb/s network controller options plus NDC modules including 4x port 1Gb/s or 10Gb/s, you have a wide range for network communications.
