Dell PowerEdge M620 Blade Server - System Overview

Description

dell m620 blade server front elevation

The PowerEdge M620 server is designed for use in Dell's PowerEdge M1000e blade enclosure. A maximum of 16 half-height blade servers are supported vertically in the enclosure, but they can also be mixed with other blade servers and form factors. The M1000e blade enclosure also supports several generations of blade servers in the same chassis, all of which can be managed from a single interface using the Chassis Management Controller (CMC), simplifying management and deployment.

There are two blade chassis that support different heat sinks which affect the number of supported memory modules on the system.

Performance

The M620 features Intel's C602 chipset to support one or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors supporting two to 12 cores of processing power. Each CPU has access to 12 memory slots for a total of 24 memory slots in a two processor configuration.

Memory

With two E5-2600 v2 processors installed, and all 24 memory slots loaded with 64GB DDR3 load reduced DIMM (LRDIMM) modules, the system will support up to 1.5TB of memory at speeds of up to 1866MT/s. Using the previous generation E5-2600 modules and 32GB DDR3 memory modules the system will support half that at 768GB, and speeds of up to 1600MT/s. Two module designs support different heat sinks which affects the maximum memory supported, and include:

  • 57mm heatsinks support 95W and under processors for up to 24DIMM slots
  • 77mm heatsinks support 115W to 130W processors for up to 20 DIMM slots supported
  • 97mm heatsinks are for Dell fresh air configurations and support CPUs 95W and under with 16 DIMM slots

Storage

The Dell M620 has two hot plug storage bays on the front of the system that will support a maximum of 2.4TB using two SAS 1.2TB hard drives. Express Flash PCIs SSDs, SATA HDD/SSD or SAS HDD/SSDs can also be installed on the system to support different workloads. The system features one of two internal HD/RAID controllers. The PERC S110 or H310 internal HD/RAID controllers ensure your onboard data is protected and have a dedicated connection to the system board and offer 3GBs and 6GBs speeds, respectively. External storage solutions supporting database can be managed with the addition of an external RAID/HD controller like the PERC H710 or H710P controllers, which offer 6GBs access speeds. An optional Dual SD card can be installed to support a failsafe hypervisor. When used in mirror mode, if one card dies on the Dual SD card module, the other card will take over ensuring continuation of virtualized workloads.

Expansion

Two 3.0 compliant PCIe 3.0 mezzanine connectors are available to support additional I/O cards for Ethernet connectivity at speeds from 1GB to 40GB with a quad port InfiniBand connection. As mentioned above additional HD/ RAID controllers can also be installed in one of the slots to access external storage. I/O is also handled by a custom network daughter card (NDC), part of the Select Network Adapters family, that supports the LAN on Motherboard (LOM) subsystem with a dual port 10GbE interface.

Management

Dell's OpenManage system management solution is designed to reduce complexity and improve ease of use with a combination of embedded features paired with software applications. iDRAC7 with Lifecycle Controller is at the heart of the management system and allows administrators to access the server locally or remotely through a common browser, out of band, whether the system is on or off. iDRAC is also installed on all Dell servers giving users the benefit of a simplified and consistent way to manage dell products. OpenManage also integrates with third party consoles to simplify systems management. To manage multiple blade chassis and or enclosures, Dell's Chassis Management Controller (CMC) is accessed through the enclosure CMC module on the M1000e enclosure.

Summary

The PowerEdge M620 blade server is an adaptable and reliable platform for a variety of standard business applications, and for use in virtualized environments. The M1000e offers data centers and enterprise companies a quick ROI with shared cooling, power, and networking. Scaling to support additional workloads is also simplified using Dell's integrated management tools.
