Dell EMC PowerEdge MX750c Server Blade - System Overview

Description

Dell EMC PowerEdge MX750c Server Blade front

Part of the composable and adaptable, data-center focused Dell EMC PowerEdge MX7000 enclosure is the Dell EMC PowerEdge MX750c Server Blade. This latest server blade features 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors for improved compute, memory, PCIe 4.0 compatibility, and up to 40 cores per CPU. It can support up to 4TB or DDR4 memory and up to 7.68TB of persistent memory modules for enhanced resiliency. As part of the Dell EMC PowerEdge MX7000 chassis, the MX750c provides compute, memory and storage, which the chassis provides the power, cooling, networking, and management functions. With the addition of more server or storage blades the MX7000 can easily scale out and can provide multi-chassis networking for up to 10 chassis. Offering shared pool of disaggregated compute and storage resources enables resources to be applied, and once no longer needed, redistributed.

Performance

With dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the 3rd generation, this blade can field up to 40x physical cores and 80 virtual threads per platinum level processor. Gold and Silver Intel Xeon Scalable processors will deliver up to 32x and 20x physical cores respectively. 3rd gen processors also deliver PCIe 4.0 offering twice the bandwidth compared to PCIe 3.0. more PCIe lanes are also supported with up to 64x compared to only 40x lanes on the previous 2nd generation processors. memory bandwidth has also been increased with 8-channel memory compared to only 6-channel memory on the previous generation.

Memory

Featuring 8-channel memory, each processor has 16x memory module slots for support of 2x DIMM modules per channel. With both processors installed, there are 32x active memory module slots capable of supporting Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) and Persistent Memory Series 200 (PMem) modules offering increased resiliency. PMem modules can be used in Memory Mode without persistence for a larger memory footprint or in App Direct mode, which does offer persistence.

Storage

Dell PowerEdge MX750c Server closeup

The Dell EMC PowerEdge MX750c Server Blade supports 4x to 6x SAS, SATA or NVMe storage devices in front depending on the configuration. Several internal HD/RAID controllers are available to support storage needs, although a RAID controller is required if installing SAS storage devices. SATA drives can use the integrated S150 SW controller for limited RAID functionality. This server sled can also be attached to up to 7x MX5016s storage modules within the MX7000 chassis through the storage fabric C connection offering redundancy when two modules are installed.

Expansion

The MX7000 chassis is highly redundant offering up to 2x modules for fabrics A, B, C and for management. The server blades connect to the I/O modules through expansion cards hosted in the PCIe 4.0 x16 mezzanine card slots at the back of the chassis. There is a separate mezzanine slot for fabrics A, B, and C. Each mezzanine card has two connectors since each fabric supports a redundant module, although, redundancy is not required. In addition to the mezzanine connectors there is a dedicated slot to support an optional boot optimized storage subsystem or BOSS, which supports two PCIe Gen3 M.2 drives in a hardware RAID with 2x M.2 drives installed. Additionally, there is a dedicated slot for a PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC) offering RAID and HBA functions depending on the choice of controller.

Management

OpenManage Modular Edition (OME) provides management for single or multiple chassis with unified management using one or two MX9002m management modules installed on the MX7000 chassis. The management modules leverage the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) 9.0 module in each server sled for inventory and status. This platform is also compatible with Quick Sync 2 Bluetooth for at chassis management using a smartphone or tablet.

Summary

Part of Dell EMC’s MX7000 enclosure offering a kinetic infrastructure for the modern software-defined data center, the Dell EMC PowerEdge MX750c Server Blade delivers powerful 2-socket performance. Offering shared pools of disaggregate compute and storage resources this flexible platform can apply resources where and when it’s needed. Dell’s OpenManage Enterprise enables multiple modular chassis to be managed from a single point of contact while reducing cost while simplifying management with automation through a seamless integration with the server sleds iDRAC 9.0 management module. The MX750c server sled can deliver up to 8TB of memory for complex in-memory applications, database, and analytics.
