When outfitted with four processors the Dell EMC PowerEdge R840 Server can easily tackle a number for high-performance applications including, data analytics, machine learning, and other data-intensive workloads. It also features Dell’s out of band management tool iDRAC and OpenManage for automation and management of several servers.
You can install two or four Intel Xeon Scalable processors from either the first or second generation. However, you need the CPUs with an “M” suffix if you want to achieve 6TB memory capacity as only those processors with an “M” will support that memory capacity. Gen 2 Intel Xeon Scalable processors support memory speeds of up to 2933MHz, compared to 2666MHz using Gen 1 Scalable processors, they also support more memory in general. There are a number of power options depending on your server configuration.
Each processor supports 12x memory module slots with two modules per channel. There is a total of 48 active memory module slots with a quad-processor configuration. Only DDR4 ECC Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM), or Non-Volatile (NVDIMM) memory modules are supported on this system. Only a total of 384GB of NVDIMM modules are supported, the remaining memory slots can be outfitted with RDIMM memory modules.
There are several storage configurations available on the Dell R840 server including 8x 2.5-inch SAS or SATA, 24x 2.5-inch SAS or SATA with 12 drive bays that can be outfitted with NVMe drives, and a configuration with 24x NVMe drives in front. Two more 2.5-inch SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs can be installed in a rear drives cage. The system features an S140 integrated software RAID controller but the system is also compatible with Dell’s other controllers including the PERC H330, H730P, H740P, and HBA330. Fro external storage, you can install a PERC H840 RAID controller. The system also supports Dell’s Boot optimized Storage Subsystem, AKA BOSS, for support of the OS.
Depending on your choice of risers the system will support either (4) x16 PCIe Gen3 slots or (2) x16 slots with (4) x8 PCIe slots. Options include a maximum of two GPUs from Nvidia or a maximum of FPGAs (Field Programable Gate Arrays). You can also install optional RAID controllers as mentioned in the storage section above or faster network cards. You still have other options with the Network Daughter Card, which occupies a dedicated slot on the back of the system and can be outfitted with several different network connection modules.
The system features a cyber-resistant architecture that helps to maintain system integrity with cryptographically-signed firmware and secure boot. This system also features the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller, or iDRAC, for at chassis and remote access. OpenManage is also supported on this system for datacenter and enterprise business applications, offing management of several generations of Dell servers plus third-party hardware.
Boasting up to four processors in a 2U chassis the Dell EMC PowerEdge R840 Server delivers powerful performance for in-database analytics and data-intensive applications. Scale on demand with up to 26 storage bays and up to 48 memory module slots.
