Dell PowerVault MD1220 Storage Array - System Overview

Description

Dell MD1220 server front of system

The Dell PowerVault MD1220 storage array supports up to 24 small form factor (SFF) drives to provide up to 12TB of storage in a 2U form factor. It can also be combined with seven additional enclosures for up to 96TB of storage. With a 6Gb/s SAS connection, IOPS (Input/output operations per second) capabilities have also increased by 35% over Dell’s previous generation storage arrays. Dell’s OpenManage software features a user-friendly interface and wizard-based tools to make it easy to manage the system, regardless of the user's storage management knowledge.

Storage

This storage array can house up to 24 small form factor SAS drives to provide a maximum storage capacity of 12TB when using 500GB drives. Administrators can configure this array with a mixture of hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), and self-encrypting drives (SEDs) to create the optimal storage environment for their data needs. HDDs provide a larger storage capacity, whereas solid-state drives will increase application performance, and SEDs offer enhanced data protection with drive-level encryption. All drives are hot-swappable to make for easy drive replacement. Eight of these enclosures can be daisy-chained together to expand this enclosure to its full DAS capacity of 96TB of data. This enclosure supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60.

Management

Dell PowerVault MD1220 details

Dell's OpenManage Storage Manager Software reduces the resource load on the system by using a single interface to manage both internal server storage and the MD1220 array. With this software, administrators are able to assign hot spares and configure data redundancy for added data protection. Redundant enclosure management capabilities are provided with the array’s two enclosure management modules (EMMs). The software’s wizard-based installation and preconfigured options make system deployment hassle-free, even for novice-level administrators.

Summary

The Dell PowerVault MD1220 storage array offers performance, reliability, and speed to fulfill data-intensive applications in Dell’s 13th generation of PowerEdge servers. This enclosure can hold up to 24 SFF drives, or can be daisy-chained with up to seven additional enclosures to provide a maximum of 96 drives. Performance-exhaustive applications like database, web, and email hosting are easily satisfied with the systems 6Gb/s connection, which offers twice the throughput compared to previous generation arrays. Time spent on system management is reduced with Dell’s OpenManage software which allows administrators to manage multiple systems through a single interface and automates the majority of common management tasks.
