Dell PowerVault MD1400 Storage Array - System Overview

Description

Dell PowerVault MD1400 storage array

The Dell PowerVault MD1400 storage array is a low-cost storage expansion solution for Dell's 13th generation of PowerEdge servers. Each enclosure houses up to 12 drives, and configuration options are flexible with the ability to mix drive technologies and form factors within a single enclosure. The 12Gb/s SAS connection delivers double the bandwidth compared to the previous generations of Dell's MD storage solutions. System management complexity is reduced with Dell's OpenManage software which automates the majority of common management tasks, such as node deployment, error correction, and system updates.

Storage

The Dell MD1400 can be outfitted with up to 12 large form factor (LFF) or 12 small form factor (SFF) storage devices. Maximum storage is achieved using 12x 3.5-inch 10TB NL-SAS drives to provide a maximum of 120TB of storage. SAS and near-line SAS (NL-SAS), HDDs and SSD drives can be mixed in a single enclosure to create the optimal tiered data environment your workload. If drive security is an issue, administrators can opt for self-encrypted drives (SEDs), which provide drive-level encryption and support Secure Erase software to permanently delete drive data before redeployment. Eight of these enclosures can be daisy-chained together using a 12Gb/s SAS host bus adapter (HBA) or a PERC9 series 12Gb HD/RAID controller. Fully expanded, with eight enclosures daisy-chained together the system will support 96 drives and up to 960TB of data. Each array has two enclosure management modules (EMMs) and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60.

Management

Dell's OpenManage software leverages an Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) to automate the majority of common management tasks. “Zero-Touch” auto configuration hastens server deployment by enabling system configuration capabilities the moment the network cable is connected. Administrators can manage multiple systems through a single interface remotely via a tablet or smartphone, and automated diagnostic reports make system troubleshooting a straightforward, easy process.

Summary

The Dell PowerVault MD1400 storage array supports up to 12x 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives and up to 120TB of data to maximize storage capacity and application performance when connected to one of Dell's 13th generation PowerEdge servers. Support for a variety of drive technologies, allows administrators to customize their storage environment for optimal performance. To maximize storage capacity even further, this storage array can be daisy-chained to another seven enclosures to provide a total of 96 drives and up to 960TB of data. Dell's OpenManage management technology provides a simplified approach to system management with the ability to monitor multiple systems through a single interface and starts working the moment a network cable is connected.
