The Dell PowerVault ME5012 Storage Array is a 2U base system that can be expanded to support up to 264 drives using optional expansion enclosures. Other PowerVault appliances include the 2U 24x 2.5” bay ME5024, and the 5U 84x 3.5” drive bay ME5084. These systems support a 12GB/s SAS backend protocol and dual active controllers that are validated for use with Dell PowerEdge Servers (16G ready).
Dell PowerVault ME5012 Storage Array - System Overview
Description
All-flash, hybrid-flash and HDD only arrays are supported in a native black-level SAN or DAS format. For Network Attached Storage or NAS storage options, only the Dell PowerVault NX Series NAS appliances can be used. The 2U ME5 base enclosures can be outfitted with single or dual controllers each featuring up to 8X ports for Networking, expansion enclosures, and I/O. The 5U PowerVault ME0584 supports only dual controllers. With an option for several different controller cards, the system can be configured to support a number of communication protocols including Fibre Channel (FC) at 32Gb, iSCSI at 25GbE or up to 10GBase-T, and a12Gb HD mini-SAS connection.

Each controller offers 8GB of memory and 16GB of Cache for up to 24GB of memory per controller. Management software for this system includes Dell PowerVault manager featuring an HTML5 GUI, with the option for command line interface or CLI and OpenManage Enterprise 3.9. A plugin for VMware vCenter enables the ability to manage the ME5 arrays through vCenter.
