Gigabyte H231-G20 Server - System Overview

Gigabyte H231-G20 server nodes

Description

Also compatible with Data Centric Persistent Memory Modules (DCPMM), the Gigabyte H231-G20 server is designed for high-performance computing applications. The server nodes are accessible from the back of the system. Each node has a split-level configuration with the compute and memory on the bottom with a GPU tray with a PCIe switch on top. Storage, cooling, and power, are handled at the chassis level.

Performance

It can be outfitted with dual 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with a thermal design point (TDP) of up to 165W in each server node. Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Scalable processors are supported offering varying memory and memory speed support. 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors provide the fastest memory speeds and support for DCPMMs. A single double-width GPU can be installed on each of the server nodes and supports several high-end GPUS like the Nvidia Tesla V100, and Pascal-based P100, P40 and P4 GPUs to name a few. The system is powered by dual redundant 2200W 80 plus Platinum PSUs.

Memory

Each of the two server nodes has 16x memory module slots with 8x slots per processor. With the CPUs providing a 6-channel memory architecture that means one set of modules can be outfitted with two memory modules. Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM), and Data Centric Persistent Memory Modules (DCPMM) are supported in varying capacities. LRDIMMs will provide the highest capacity at up to 2TB per server node for 4TB with both nodes installed with dual processors. Only 2x 256GB DCPMMs can be installed per node and must be paired with an RDIMM module in the same memory channel. RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed. Depending on the CPU installed in the system, memory will run at 2933MHz, 2666MHz, 2400MHz, or 2133MHz. Only 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors provide the fastest memory tier and support for DCPMMs.

Storage

Gigabyte H231-G20 rear

The Gigabyte H231-G20 server chassis offers 24x 2.5-inch drive bays up front with 4x of them dedicated for U.2 NVMe, SAS or SATA drive formats, while the other 20x are dedicated for SATA or SAS drive formats. These drives are even distributed between the two server nodes for a total of 12x drive bays per node. The default storage condition supports 4x U.2 drives and 0x SAS or SATA drive bays active. There are 2x Broadcom SAS expander cards, but a SAS card is required in each server node to enable the other 20x drive bays on the front of the system. SATA drives are provided with limited RAID from the Intel C621 Chipset, while the U.2 NVMe drives are supported using a virtual RAID on CPU key provided with the system that supports only Intel-based SSDs.

Expansion

The upper storage tray of each server node is designed to support a single double-wide Nvidia GPU with a PCIe 3.0 x16 bus. Two additional PCIe 3.0 low-profile slots on each server node provide a x16 and x8 bus connection for use with network and storage controllers. Finally, each server node supports a single PCIe 3.0 x16 mezzanine card slot for an optional OCP mezzanine card that can provide 2-4 ports with various network connection speed options depending on which card is installed.

Management

Each of the sever sleds has dual 10GbE ports for LAN 1 and LAN2, along with a dedicated management port. A single Chassis Management Console port is located on the back of the chassis adjacent to the PSUs for monitoring both nodes in the chassis without the need for additional cabling. It connects to the ASPEED AST1250 CMC Chip on the main chassis, which in turn connectors to the integrated ASPEED AST2500 baseboard management controllers (BMC) in each of the server nodes. And easy to use graphical browser-based user interface is provided by the Gigabyte Management Console which utilizes an AMI MegaRAC SP-X for BMC server management of a single server or small cluster. The Gigabyte Server Management or GSM, provides for multiple servers or large clusters and provides additional tools to Administrators to manage the system using either an IPMI or Redfish (RESTful API) connection.

Summary

For high-performance computing applications, the Gigabyte H231-G20 high-density server provides a quad-socket Intel Xeon Scalable architecture-based platform in two separate server nodes with ample storage close to the CPU for quick access. This platform excels in applications like enterprise IT database, cloud, and use in a software defined storage environment. Highly adaptable to support a number of workloads, it can also be used for basic compute, storage, networking or virtualization for edge computing, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), general file storage, and remote data center management. A single Nvidia GPU supported in each of the nodes provides compute acceleration for HPC applications.
