Gigabyte R152-Z33 front detail

Designed for networking applications, the Gigabyte R152-Z33 is a 1U chassis that can be outfitted with a single 2nd or 3rd Generation AMD EPYC Series processor. Depending on the chosen CPU, a maximum of 4TB of memory is supported across its 16x DIMM slots. On the front of the system there are 10x 2.5-inch Gen4 U.2 hot-swappable HDD/SSD drive bays. Dual 1GbE LAN ports via the Intel I350-AM2 are accessible from the rear of the server along with a single 10/100/1000 Management LAN port. A Gen4 PCIe x16 slot is available on the rear of the system. The system is powered by dual redundant 1100W 80 PLUS Platinum power supplies. The original release of this chassis supported 1st or 2nd Generation AMD EPYC Series CPUs with Rev.100. Rev.A00 applies a software update enabling support for 3rd Generation AMD EPYC CPUs.

Performance

Rev.A00

A single AMD EPYC Rome (7002) or Milan (7003) Processor can be installed on the Gigabyte R152-Z33 Server. It supports a configurable Thermal Design Point (cTDP) of 240W with conditional support up to 280W. The thermal range supports many of the current options from the AMD EPYC 2nd or 3rd Generation families including CPUs with up to 64 physical cores and 128 virtual threads.

Rev.100

Rev.100 was the first release of the system featuring support for 1st or 2nd Generation AMD EPYC Series Processors. It has a TDP of 225W and a cTDP of 240W. With first-generation processors installed, the system only supported a maximum of 32x physical cores and 64x virtual threads. 2nd generation processors enable up to 64 cores and 128 virtual threads.

Memory

There are a total of 16x DIMM slots on the system board of the Gigabyte R152-Z33 supported by AMD’s 8-channel memory architecture. Only DDR4 memory modules can be installed and feature memory speeds between 3200MHz or 2933MHz. Registered DIMMs (RDIMM) and Load Reduced DIMMs (LRDIMM) are both compatible and can have a maximum capacity of 128GB per memory module for up to 2TB at full capacity. 3DS RDIMMs and LRDIMMs are also compatible with this system when a 3rd Generation AMD EPYC Processor is installed. The maximum capacity supported by the 3DS memory modules is 256GB, and with all 16x slots out fitted with 2x of these modules the system will support a maximum memory capacity of 4TB.

Storage

Storage solutions on this system include 10x 2.5-inch Gen4 U.2 hot-swappable HDD/SSD drive bays. In addition, there are 2x M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 slots on the system board for fast access storage or OS installation. Storage solutions are supported using an OCP NVMe card, or with the installation of a GRAID SupremeRAID, which offers more control over storage.

Expansion

A single full-height, half-length PCIe Gen4 x16 slot is accessible from the rear of the Gigabyte R152-Z33. Dual M.2 slots with a PCIe Gen4 x4 interface are on the system board. An OCP 2.0 mezzanine slot with PCIe Gen4 x16 bandwidth (Type1, P1, P2, P3, and P4) supports an optional OCP 2.0 mezzanine card and can provide additional connectivity with the rest of your IT infrastructure.

Management

Gigabyte’s management features are all available through the Gigabyte Management Console (AMI MegaRAC SP-X) web interface. The Gigabyte Management Console grants access to event logs, sensors, remote access, and other crucial functionality. The integrated Aspeed AST2500 management controller provides Uses the AMI MegaRAC SP-X graphical interface for remote access. Gigabyte’s Server Management Console is also provided free of charge, and provides additional tools for managing multiple servers or large server clusters.

Summary

With only a single processor, the Gigabyte R152-Z33 Server is designed for networking purposes in small to medium-sized businesses. This platform can be used to support a number of business-critical applications like use as a shared Internet connection, for support of remote workers via VPN and use as a general file server, to name a few. Housed in a 1U chassis for a compact footprint in your office space, the 3rd Generation AMD EPYC Series processors allow up to 4TB of memory to be installed. The front of the chassis houses 10x 2.5-inch Gen4 U.2 NVMe drive bays by default with a single PCIe x16 Gen4 expansion slot on the back of the system.
