Offering up to 24x SAS/SATA storage bays in a 2U chassis, the Gigabyte R271-Z31 Server supports a single AMD EPYC series processor. It can support up to 4TB of memory depending on the CPU installed. This system is designed for networking applications like hosting and intranet, use as a shared Internet connection or as a virtual server, plus a range of other applications.
With a memory capacity up to 4TB, the Gigabyte R271-Z31 Server can be adapted to support a number of diverse networking workloads. There are 3x revisions to this chassis 100, A00, and B00. The latest version, rev.B00, supports AMD’s 3rd gen EPYC processors with 8x to 64x cores in a single socket. This system will have a positive affect on your bottom line with a quick return on investment aided by a single processor implementation. While the sections below will mention some differences between the revisions, this page will concentrate on the latest rev.B00.
There are three revisions to this chassis with the latest Revision.B00 supporting 3rd generation AMD EPYC series processors with 8x to 64x physical cores and 16x to 128x virtual threads. This platform also supports 1st generation AMD EPYC processors (rev. 100, rev. A00) and 2nd generation AMD EPYC processors (rev. A00, rev. B00). With a thermal design point of 280W, the motherboard will support the full family of AMD EPYC CPUs from either generation. AMD EPYC CPUs provide 8x memory channels and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes for increased throughput for I/O.
Rev.100This was the first release of this system and supports the 1st generation AMD EPYC processors 7001 series with a TDP of 200W. 1st generation AMD EPYC processors have a top core count of 32 physical cores and 64 virtual threads. In this configuration, the system is limited to 2TB of memory and a top memory speed of up to 2666MHz. Please refer to the product documentation for any other changes.
Rev.A00This is the first revision to the Rev.100 version and with an upgrade to the BIOS can be outfitted with 2nd generation AMD EPYC processors 7002 series with a TDP of 225W and a configurable TDP (cTDP) of 240W. 2nd generation AMD EPYC processors have a top core count of 64 physical cores and 128 virtual threads. The specs from Gigabyte also indicate compatibility with a TDP of 280W under certain conditions. Memory speeds of 3200 and 2933MHz are supported, along with a maximum capacity of up to 2TB. Please refer to the product documentation for any other changes.
With 8x memory channels and 16x memory module slots, the Gigabyte R271-Z31 Server can support 2x DIMMs per channel. Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) and 3DS versions of the same are supported on this chassis. 3DS RDIMMs and LRDIMMs feature a stacked die and as a result a greater density of DRAM on the substrate. At full capacity using 3DS memory modules, the Rev.B00 platform can support up to 4TB of memory operating at speeds of up to 3200MHz using 3rd generation AMD EPYC processors.
24x hot-swap SAS/SATA bays line the front of the system with up to 16x of those bays available by default. In order to use all 24x drive bays, the server requires a SAS/SATA storage controller. For SAS drive implementations a discrete SAS HBA/RAID controller is also required. A single M.2 SSD storage slot PCIe Gen3 x4 slot can be found on the system board that supports NGFF-2280/2260/2242 cards.
This platform has 2 x SFP+ 10Gb/s LAN ports based on Broadcom BCM 57810S controller plus 1 x 10/100/1000 management LAN port. 7x PCIe 3.0 slots at the back of the system can be used to support additional network controllers or a low-profile HBA
Outfitted with the ASPEED AST2500 module on the system board enables Administrators to remotely manage the system with the aid of the dedicated management port on the back of the system. Gigabyte also provides a suite of software utilities to help Administrators manage the system, available free of charge. Gigabyte’s value-added management includes the Gigabyte Management Console which comes pre-installed on each server to provide real-time health monitoring and management. Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) leverages the Management Console to provide management and maintenance for clusters of servers simultaneously over the Internet. GSM complies with IPMI and Redfish standards and provides a complete range of management functions.
The Gigabyte R271-Z31 Server excels at networking applications with only a single AMD EPYC series processor. With just a single processor it offers incredible value and a quick return on investment compared to an intel-based 2-processor alternative. With support for up to 4TB of memory and ample storage up front from 24x storage bays, this platform is highly adaptable to supporting a number of critical business applications.
