Gigabyte R282-P92 Server

Description

For general networking applications the Gigabyte R282-P92 Server excels. It can support one or two Ampere Altra Max with up to 128 cores each from the latest generation or one or two Ampere Altra CPUs with up to 80 cores each from the previous generation. Applications include virtualization, a shared VPN connection, use as a general file server, and a range of other options. Offering a combination of SATA and NVMe storage options enables Administrators to place active hot data on faster NVMe storage and less accessed data on high capacity but slower SATA drives. Each CPU socket can also support up to 4TB of memory at full capacity with an 8-memory channel architecture. All PCIe slots supported on the system are PCIe 4.0 offering twice the bandwidth compared to PCIe 3.0. Powering the system are dual redundant 1+1 PLUS Platinum 2000W PSUs.

Performance

This system can be outfitted with one or two second-generation Ampere Altra Max with up to 128 cores per processor. Designed for Edge and Cloud ecosystems, these CPUs feature a 64-bit multi-core Arm-based architecture to support workloads with high-bandwidth and excellent power efficiency. CPUs with a thermal design power (TDP) rating of up to 250W are supported and includes processors with the highest core counts. They deliver 8-memory channel architecture and up to 192 PCIe 4.0 lanes in a 2x processor configuration.

Memory

With 32x DDR4 DIMM slots on the system board, the 2U Gigabyte R282-P92 Server has 16x memory module slots per CPU. With both processors installed and all memory module slots loaded with 256GB memory modules in all 32x slots, the system can support up to 8TB of memory. Registered DIMMs (RDIMM) and Load-Reduced DIMMs (LRDIMM) are supported with memory speeds of up to 3200 MHz.

Storage

The front storage bays on this system are color coded and even divided between storage types. Blue drive tray release tabs indicate support for SATA drives types, while the neon green release tabs indicate support for Gen4 NVMe storage devices. All drive bays are hot-swappable. A single PCIe 4.0 x4 slot on the system board can be outfitted with an NVMe M.2 2242/2260/2280/22110 storage device to support the operating system. SAS drives are not supported natively.

Expansion

There are 8x expansion slots on the system board with half providing a full-height x16 slot and the other 4x providing a low-profile x8 expansion slot. In a dual processor configuration, there are 192 PCIe lanes but only 128 PCIe lanes in a single CPU configuration. All slots are PCIe 4.0 offering twice the bandwidth compared to PCIe 3.0.

Management

Gigabyte offers two management tools that are available free of charge. The Gigabyte management Console comes pre-loaded and allows Administrators to access the system from a standard browser. It is designed for use with a single server or small server cluster. The Gigabyte Server Manager (GSM) leverages the Gigabyte Server Console through the GSM Agent. GSM provides more management tools and is suitable for managing multiple server deployments and large clusters of servers.
