Offering support for up to 4x double-wide GPUs, the Gigabyte R292-4S0 Server is designed for high-performance computing applications like artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning, scientific analysis and simulation, and other mission critical workloads. It can also be used to support standard networking workloads like use as a shared Internet connection, hosting an Intranet, and file access via VPN. Outfitted with 4x Cooper Lake it offers more cores and better performance than 2nd generation processors. It can also support a large memory footprint for in-memory database applications. There are dual 3200W 80 PLUS Platinum PSUs which provide 1+1 redundancy without GPUs installed.

Performance

The 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors are an intermediate step up from Skylake second generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs and use the same 14nm architecture with 48 PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes and 6x memory channels. However, they do offer vastly improved throughput with 6x ultra-path interconnects (UPI) per processor compared to only 3x UPI per CPU on the 2nd generation offerings. They also feature more cores in general, although, this system is limited to CPUs with a thermal design point of up to 165W. Only Gold or Platinum Intel SP CPUs are qualified for use on this system.

Memory

“Cooper Lake” Intel Xeon Scalable processors, while part of Intel’s 3rd generation line up, only support 6x memory channels when compared to Intel “Ice Lake” CPUs, which support an 8x memory channel architecture. Only Platinum or Gold intel Xeon Scalable processors featuring 6x Ultra Path Interconnects (UPI) are recommended for this system. Each CPU is in charge of 12x memory module slots for a total of 48x active DIMM slots with all 4x CPUs installed. The specifications for this system indicate it can support up to 6TB of memory with all 4x CPUS installed and 48x memory module slots outfitted with 128GB memory modules. Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM), and Intel Optane Persistent Memory (PMem) 200 series are supported. PMem modules are also known as non-volatile memory (NVM) and Data Centric Persistent Memory Modules (DCPMM). A maximum of 9x DCPMMs are supported and are deployed in specific configurations in conjunction with RDIMM DDR4. Outfitted with on DIMM per channel (1DPC) memory will run at up to 3200MHz. At 2x DIMMs per channel (2DPC) memory will run at up to 2933MHz.

Storage

There are 10x 2.5-inch drive bays on the front of the Gigabyte R292-4S0 Server that can be outfitted with SAS, SATA or NVMe storage devices. SAS drives are supported via an optional SAS HBA/RAID controller add-on-card. The integrated Intel chipset provides software RAID of 0, 1, 5, or 10. Using an optional SAS add-on-card will provide more RAID options. A Gen 3.0 x2 PCIe slot on the system board supports a single M.2 drive that can be used to support the operating system.

Expansion

6x PCIe Gen 3.0 x16 slots are hosted in three separate risers and provide for additional network communications, SAS drive support, and can be outfitted with up to 4x double-width GPUs or 6x PCIe host bus adapters (HBA). Several GPUs are qualified for use on this system and include the NVIDIA Ampere-based A100 and A40, plus the RTX A6000 and the T4 Turing based GPU ideal for distributed environments. A PCIe Gen3.0 x 16 mezzanine slot can be outfitted with a OCP card providing additional ports and connection speeds for network communications. Two integrated ports on the back of the system provide network communication at 10Gb/s along with a dedicated mLAN port for remote management of the system.

Management

Using the integrated management port on the back of the system provides access to the ASPEED AST 2500 baseboard management controller (BMC) for remote and at chassis management of the system. The BMC is IPMI 2.0 compatible and offers a number of features for Admittaturs to effectively manage the system. Gigabyte also provides a number of free management software suites including the Gigabyte Management Console, which comes preloaded. The Gigabyte Management Console to help manage a single server or small cluster of server nodes using an intuitive graphical user interface. The Gigabyte Server management provides for multiple remote server management via the BMC in each server. It is compatible with either IPMI or Redfish connection interfaces and provides several other ancillary programs for more granular control.
