Supermicro FatTwin SuperServer F619P2-RTN - System Overview

Supermicro F619P2-RTN node

Description

The multi-node 4U twin architecture of the Supermicro FatTwin SuperServer F619P2-RTN supports dual 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors in all 8x nodes. Using 2nd generation CPUs, each of the 8x nodes can be configured with up to 3TB of memory, for up to 24TB total in the 4U chassis. Memory can run at speeds up to 2933MHz if both the CPU and memory modules support that speed. Intel Optane DC Persistent memory modules (DCPMM) are also compatible, although only with 2nd generation CPUs. This high-density platform is easy to configure and maintain, keeping costs down with a low power consumption and maximum reliability.

Performance

Each of the server nodes can support dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the first or second generation. The latter offer more security without compromise and incorporate a number of technologies that help safeguard your system. The dual processors feature a thermal design point from 70W to 165W and support 12x DIMMs with 6x memory slots per processor. When using second-generation CPUs, the server supports Intel Optane DC memory modules (DCPMM) and a faster DDR4 memory speed. In order to have full access to the PCIe slots, DIMM slots, and onboard controllers, both CPUs are required.

Memory

Dual CPUs in each of the 8x compute nodes feature 12x memory module slots. Administrators can populate all of the slots to benefit from a maximum of 3TB of memory and maximum memory speeds of up to 2933MHz when using 3DS RDIMM/LRDIMM. On the other hand, DCPMM offers less memory, 2TB with a speed of 2666MHz, and can only be deployed with 2nd gen Intel CPUs.

Storage

Intel’s C621 chipset supports 6x hot-swap drives in each of the 8x server nodes on the F619P2-RTN server. Hot-swap drive bays give users the flexibility of removing drives without having to shut down the entire system. Each node is outfitted with 6x 2.5-inch storage bays up front to support SAS, SATA, or NVMe in two different configurations for 48x drives total in the 4U chassis: 6x hot-swap 2.5” storage bays are allocated to each server node and will support SAS/SATA or 2x hot-swap 2.5” SAS/SATA and 4x optional NVMe U.2 drives. Each server node also features an M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slot for more storage or to support the OS with 2260, 2280, and 22110 form factors.

Expansion

The system has a total of 16x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots for expansion. Half of these slots are reserved for Super I/O Module (SIOM) cards on the rear of each node to deliver the best network performance. As mentioned in the storage section above, this model also supports a single M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slot on the X11 motherboard in each server of the 8x nodes for additional storage.

Management

To manage the FatTwin F619P2-RTN, there is a list of software programs that can remotely or locally monitor the system’s health. A dedicated Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) GbE LAN port on the back panel allows users to take advantage of the remote access feature. IPMI provides remote web-based access to the server including power, restart, and statistics about the hardware like temperature, inventory, and voltages.

Summary

The Supermicro FatTwin SuperServer F619P2-RTN sits at 4U with Supermicro’s twin architecture that includes 8x nodes. Users are able to swap out the 6x 2.5-inch drives on each of the 8x server nodes, which are compatible with SAS, SATA, or NVMe. Each of the 8x server nodes also supports 12x DIMMs with up to 3TB of memory when 1st or 2nd gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors are deployed.
