Supermicro SuperServer 2029U-TR25M - System Overview

Description

Supermicro 2029U-TRTP front

What makes the Supermicro SuperServer 2029U-TR25M different from the rest of the family are the dual Mellanox 25GbE SFP28 ethernet LAN ports. Aside from that, this platform supports the same capacity for storage, memory, and PCIe options as the other platforms in the SuperServer 2029U family. This platform comes in a minimal configuration with dual processors and 4x DDR4 memory modules but supports much, much more.

Performance

Two first or second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 cores are supported on this system. Each processor supports 6 memory channels but second-generation processors are required to support the maximum memory of 6TB.

Memory

Using first generation CPUs memory will run at speeds of up to 2666MT/s, while 2nd generation processors will run at speeds of up to 2933MT/s. Each CPU supports six memory channels with two memory modules in each channel, for 12x memory slots per processor, and 24x slots total with two processors installed. Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM)

Storage

Storage on the Supermicro 2029U-TR25M includes 24x front storage bays with an optional drive cage for the back that can support 2x SAS or SATA SSD drives. SATA drives are supported natively using the integrated HD/RAID controller. Alternatively, the system can support up to 20x SATA drives with up to 4x NVMe storage devices. For support of SSD drives the system can be outfitted with virtual RAID on CPU (VROC) for RAID. You also have choices for using SAS drives with several optional RAID controllers. 2x Disk on Module, or DOMs, can be installed to support your boot drive with either a single unit or two for redundancy.

Expansion

Supermicro SuperServer 2029U-TRTP rear

Up to eight PCIe 3.0 slots on the system board are active with a two-processor configuration, depending on your choice of Ultra riser card. The optional rear storage drive cage will take the place of a few of those PCIe slots. M.2 SSD storage devices can also be installed using single or dual-port PCIe cards, and can be used for a boot drive or for additional super-fast storage. SAS drives will require the use of a PCIe card, of which there are several options. Additional add-on cards can be installed to support more and faster network connections plus options for a maximum of two GPUs from Nvidia using optional riser cards.

Management

An Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 2.0 provides access to the base management controller (BMC) for health status and maintenance of the system both on site and remotely. For converged, hybrid IT, and software defined data centers Supermicro offers Redfish API which provides a simple yet secure management interface. Supermicro SuperDoctor5 (SD5) is another management suite to help monitor targeted node server health or availability in data center deployments, in real-time, with an easy to use web-based and command-line interface.

Summary

The Supermicro SuperServer 2029U-TR25M is a highly versatile platform that can be adapted to support a number of workloads. It comes in a minimal configuration with 2x Intel Xeon Scalable processors and 4x DDR4 DIMM modules but as mentioned above it has room to support up to 26X storage devices and up to 6TB of memory, including Intel Optane memory modules for reduced latency and improved data security. You can also install a maximum of two high-performance GPUs from Nvidia plus additional M.2 storage depending on your choice of risers.
