The Supermicro SuperServer 2029U-TRT delivers some impressive performance with two intel Xeon Scalable processors from either the 1st or 2nd generations. It supports Intel’s mew Optane memory modules for improved data retention and throughput. One of the main differences between the servers in this particular family (2029U) revolve around the LAN ports and storage options. This system supports 4x 1GbE RJ45 ports on the back of the system plus up to 24 front drive bays with an option to install two additional drives in the rear of the chassis.
With a dual LGA 3647 socket P motherboard, this platform supports both 1st and 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors up to 28 cores each. Depending on your choice of processor generation, the memory will run at speeds of up to 2666MHz or up to 2933MHz using 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Each CPU supports six memory channels, with 12 memory module slots assigned to each socket for a total of 24.
This platform is compatible with Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM), and Intel’s Optane (DCPMM) memory modules. The Optane modules are only supported with the 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Memory speed is dependent on processors and configuration, with 2nd generation processors supporting memory speeds of 2933MT/s compared to just 2666MT/s using 1st Gen Scalable processors.
Generous storage is provided in the front of the chassis with 24x drive bays that can be configured with SATA, SAS, or up to four NVMe SAS3 drives. The NVMe drives can be paired with up to 20 SAS3 drives for a compliment of 24 up front storage devices. Two more hot-swap 2.5-inch SSDs can be installed in back with an optional drive cage and backplane but that will reduce thte number of available PCIe slots. Additional storage can be added with the addition of PCIe cards supporting one or two NVMe M.2 SSDs. SSD storage devices are also supported using Virtual RAID on CPU (VROC) with a standard or enterprise VROC key.
Eight PCIe 3.0 expansion slots provide more opportunities to customize the system to your workload requirements. There are a few Nvidia GPUs supported on this system but requires processors with a top Thermal Design Point (TDP) of 165W. Several add-in cards for network communications, HD RAID controllers, and additional M.2 storage, as discussed above, are supported.
A management port on the back of the system provides access to both local and remote management of the system through the baseboard Management Controller (BMC). Redfish API provides a simple secure management interface for converged, Hybrid IT, and software defined data centers. It enables automation of simple configurations and maintenance tasks and is compatible with legacy and third-party vendors. Supermicro’s SuperDoctor monitors system health in the data center and provides real-time updates on health and availability.
