Designed for use as a web server, for firewall applications, and for Corporate-Wins and use as a DNS server, the Supermicro WIO SuperServer 1029P-WTRT Server can be configured to support a number of common networking applications. It offers a generous allocation of 4x PCIe 3.0 slots with dual 10GBase-T LAN ports. It can support up to 3TB of memory, including support for data centric persistent memory modules (DCPMM) thanks dual 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. It can support up to 10x drives with 8x default SATA3 and 2x NVMe and SAS drives optional. It has dual redundant 750W Platinum Level High-efficiency PSUs.
This platform will support one or two 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 physical cores and 56 virtual threads. However, certain high-frequency CPUs within the thermal design point (TDP) limitation of 165W are not supported and include, Intel Gold 6144, 6146, 6244, 6246, 6250 and 6256 CPUs.
With both processors installed the system can support up to 3TB of memory using 3DS or standard Registered (RDIMM) or Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules. 3DS modules will provide the highest capacities. Only 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors support DCPMMs and must be paired with RDIMMs. There are 12x DIMM slots total on the system board with each sock in charge of 6x memory module slots.
With a 1U chassis the Supermicro WIO SuperServer 1029P-WTRT Server supports only 10x up-front drive bays. 8x SATA3 and either 2x SATA3 or NVMe drives can be installed by default for 10x total. Alternatively, SAS3 drives can be installed but does require additional parts, including an onboard SAS controller, which will mount in one of the PCIe 3.0 slots at the back of the server. NVMe drive support will also require additional hardware. There is a single M.2 slot on the system board and 2x SuperDOM (Disk on Module) ports for support of the OS or additional storage.
There are 4x PCIe 3.0 slots total with one of the 3x x16 slots specified to support the SAS storage controller add-on-card (AOC) if SAS drives are desired. There is a single PCIe 3.0 x8 slot, and a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot on the system board for an NVMe M.2 drive. Both CPUs are required for access to all supported PCIe slots and onboard controllers. A single 70W NVIDIA t4 GPU is supported.
A dedicated integrated platform management interface (IPMI) RJ45 port on the back of the system provides network access to the baseboard management controller. This system is also compatible with the intel Node Manager and SuperDoctor 5, which is Supermicro’s proprietary management software that can be used in conjunction with Watch Dog.
For general purpose computing, the Supermicro WIO SuperServer 1029P-WTRT Server is an excellent choice and can be configured to support a number of storage and networking options. It is optimized for enterprise applications plus general-purpose computing and can be used as a networking appliance or for the cloud. This system is part of Supermicro’s WIO line of optimized servers.
