Dell Precision 7610 Rack Workstation

Description

With the Dell Precision R7610 workstation, you get the performance of a tower workstation with the security and management options of a server. The server room is also usually one of the more secure spaces in any office, typically under lock and key. As a result, the rack workstation offers greater levels of security for local and remote users. A rack workstation can be used locally but can also be accessed remotely from any location with one to one access or virtualized for one to many environments. Creating multiple VMs also allows for the use of different operating systems and applications on each virtual machine. Clearly with a rack workstation, IT Administrators have more control over the system and can also use Dell's integrated management tools.

ISV Certification

This workstation is ISV certified to perform effortlessly running industry standard software applications used by designers, engineers, financial analysts, and geologists. ISV is an acronym for Independent Software Vendor, and means these independent software vendors have tested the hardware, and components to ensure stable and reliable performance with their application. The new Dell workstations are also optimized for the creation of VR content.

Performance

This workstation features the Intel C602J chipset to support dual Xeon E5-2600 processors with up to eight cores. With two processors, up to 512GB of ECC memory modules can be installed. Users can start out with just a single processor and add a second processor to increase processing power and memory support.

Storage

Up to six 2.5-inch SATA or SAS drives and one 350MB PCIe SSD can be installed on this system. 3.5-inch drives are not supported. An integrated 6GB/s SATA/SAS storage controller supports RAID 0, 1, and 10. An optional LSI 9271-8i provides an additional RAID option, RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, along with a 1GB onboard cache.

Memory

Quad-channel memory supports up to 512GB with two CPUs using 32GB memory modules. There are 16 DIMM slots total total on the Dell R7610, with 8 slots allocated to each CPU. Memory speeds of up to 1600MHz are supported but must be paired with an appropriate Xeon E5-2600 processor. Speed of processing defaults to the slowest performer between the memory modules and CPUs.

Expansion

The Dell R7610 will support up to five full-length, full height PCie slots in a two processor configuration using optional expansion risers. Up to four single-width graphics cards can be installed on the system or three double-wide cards supporting 150W or 225W cards, depending on the power supply. Clearly there are options for additional performance and connectivity, including an optional Tera2 dual display PCoIP PCIe remote access host card for optional Wyse P25 zero client which provides a highly responsive remote workstations experience. Several graphics cards including Nvidia's Quadro line and AMD FirePro cards can be installed. The system also supports an Nvidia Tesla K20C graphics coprocessor. Powering all of this hardware is one, or two redundant hot-pluggable 1100W or 1400W 90% efficient 80PLUS PSUs.

Management

This workstation supports Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu. For virtualized Citrix environments, the system offers one to one, and one-to-many connectivity using a GPU pass-through with a certified hypervisor. Dell's Precision Optimizer takes the guesswork out of customizing the settings for specific supported programs and helps auto tune application setting to maximize performance. This rack workstation also supports several security features including a Trusted Platform module (TPM), an intrusion sensor and data protection, advanced authentication, and malware protection.

Summary

There are advantages to purchasing a rack workstation over a tower workstation and it really depends on your work style and needs. The Dell Precision R7610 workstation offers the same performance as the Dell Precision T7610 tower workstation but in many ways the rack system offers more flexibility with the ability to create VMs, and improved security for your data. Like the tower version, users can start out with just one processor and scale to two processors as work needs change, or to support additional VMs. Offering Dell's tool-less access to components also makes switching out or upgrading components a breeze.
