Dell Precision 7910 Rack Workstation - System Overview

Description

Why would you want a rack workstation instead of a tower workstation? The server room is usually one of the more secure spaces in any office, typically under lock and key, and you can open access to multiple users. The Dell R7910 rack workstation gives IT Administrators more control over the system with access to powerful out of band systems management, including iDRAC8 and Dell OpenManage with Lifecyle Access Controller. In other words, you get the performance of a tower workstation with a bunch more options for deployment, usage, and security. Outstanding!

ISV Certification

The Dell R7910 workstation is ISV certified to perform effortlessly running intensive software applications used by design engineers, financial analysts, and geologists. ISV is an acronym for Independent Software Vendor and means these independent software vendors have tested the software, hardware, and components to ensure stable and reliable performance. The new Dell workstations are also optimized for the creation of VR content. Contrary to a Mac, which is not powerful enough to run VR content, you can create and actually watch the results of your labors on your Dell workstation. HTC Vive and Oculus Rift VR solutions are supported on this system.

Performance

The Dell R7910 rack workstation front detail

Intel's C612 chipset supports dual Xeon E5-2600 v4 or E5-2600 v3 processors, just like the tower version. That means up to 44 cores using E5-2600 v4 processors, and with two processors installed it will support up to 1TB. The system is highly expandable. Users can start out with just a single processor, and add another as work needs change.

Storage

There is an abundance of storage on the Dell R7910 with room for up to eight 2.5-inch SATA/SAS drives and up to four 1TB M.2 PCIe SSDs. 3.5-inch drives are not supported on this system. SAS drives require an optional miniPERC PCIe controller but the system comes with two integrated 6GB/s SATA controllers with four ports each. The miniPERC controller installs in a miniPCIe slot leaving the riser card PCIe slots for other expansion cards. The system also supports additional PERC controllers, including the H330 and H730P supporting transfer rates of up to 12GB/s SAS with RAID of 0, 1, 5, and 10.

Memory

Quad-channel memory supports up to 1TB with two CPUs. There are 24 DIMM slots total on the Dell R7910 rack workstation, with 12 slots allocated to each CPU. Both registered (RDIMM) and load reduced (LRDIMM) DDR4 memory modules are supported but cannot be mixed. Memory modules of different capacities and ranks can be mixed but populated channels must have the same configuration. Memory speeds of up to 2400MHz are supported but must be paired with an appropriate Xeon E5 v4 processor. Speed of processing defaults to the slowest performer between the memory modules and CPUs.

Expansion

Nvidia Quadro dual-width graphics card for the Dell R7910 rack workstation

Dell's Precision R7910 rack workstation has a total of seven full-length PCIe 3.0 slots in a two processor configuration. Users can install up to three riser cards and a maximum of two double-width x16 cards. With 600W allocated to graphics support, users can install up to four single width Gen2/Gen3 graphics cards (4 x 150W) or the two double-width cards (2 x 300W) as mentioned above but that does require dual processors. The system also comes with an integrated Network Daughter card but there are many options for enhanced network I/O. Clearly there are options for additional performance and connectivity, including PCIe remote access host cards, optional network daughter cards, and graphics cards. High-end graphics cards including Nvidia Quadro and AMD FirePro are supported. There's also an optional Nvidia Grid K2a for one to many shared graphics, virtualized workstations. Powering all of this hardware is one, or two redundant hot-pluggable 1100W 90% efficient 80PLUS PSUs.

Management

The system supports Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, in addition to, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu. For workstation virtualization, users can install VMware ESXi or Citrix XenServer. Also supported, are Dell's outstanding iDRAC with Lifecycle controller, an optional WiFi Link WLAN enables advanced remote management features. Dell's Precision Optimizer takes the guesswork out of customizing the settings for specific supported programs and helps autotune application setting to maximize performance by up to 121%—free with the system. Patented Reliable Memory Technology (RMT) also helps manage your system by working in conjunction with ECC memory to detect and correct errors in real time. The Dell R7910 rack workstation also supports several security features including an intrusion sensor and data protection, advanced authentication, and malware protection.

Summary

There are advantages to purchasing a rack workstation over a tower workstation and it really depends on your work style and needs. In many ways the rack system offers more flexibility with the ability to create VMs, and much greater security. Like the tower version, users on the Dell R7910 rack workstation can start out with just one processor and scale to two processors as work needs change, or to support additional VMs. Offering Dell's tool-less access to components also makes switching out or upgrading components a breeze.
