Performance

Designed to support compute-intensive tasks like 3D rendering, product visualization and simulation, and scientific computing, Intel’s Xeon W-2400 series processors deliver up to 64 PCIe 5.0 lanes, plus support for DDR5 RDIMM memory. The W790 Chipset also supports additional PCIe 4.0 lanes for even more expansion options. Intel Active Management Technology, Intel Platform Trust Technology, and Intel Boot Guard provide the tools to manage and secure the system. The CPU also features an integrated Intel Wi-Fi solution enabling connection speeds of up to 1Gbps. W-2400 processors come in three different tiers with w7 versions supporting up to 24 cores and 48 virtual threads, w5 processors can provide up to 16x cores and 32 virtual threads, while the w3 versions provide up to 8x cores and 16 virtual threads. Intel turbo boost technology provides additional performance to handle complex computing tasks with up to 4.8GHz processing speeds compared to a base frequency of 2.6GHz. The system is powered by a single 750W or 1000W PSU offering an efficiency rating of 92%. USB ports front and back deliver connection speeds of 10Gbps and 20Gbps respectively. There is an audio combo jack on the front panel and line in/line out ports in back.

Storage

Total storage supported on this platform is up to 48TB using a combination of 3x NVMe M.2 drives at 4TB each and 3x 3.5-inch drives at 12TB each. However, other storage combinations are supported. Storage types include SATA and M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs.

Memory

Intel Xeon W-2400 CPUs support 4x DDR5 memory channels. With 8x memory module slots on the system board, this system will support two DIMMs per channel for up to 512GB of memory using 64GB modules in all slots. Error correcting code (ECC) memory modules are supported and deliver transfer speeds of up to 4800MHz depending on the configuration.

Expansion

Featuring 2x PCIe 5.0 x16 slots along with a single PCIe 4.0 x8 slot and a 3x PCIe 4.0 x4 slots, the Lenovo ThinkStation P5 provides options for high performance I/O and GPUs and computational accelerators. The PCIe 5.0 x16 slots are designated for support of up to 2x high-performance GPUs, including the NVIDIA RTX A6000 graphics cards offering 48GB of VRAM.

Summary

While the Lenovo ThinkStation P5 features a single processor, it delivers excellent performance with up to 24 cores, DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 expansion options. At full capacity it can support up to 512GB of memory, 48TB of storage, and support for 2x high-performance GPUs.
