Dell EMC PowerEdge MX840c Server Node - System Overview

Description

Dell PowerEdge MX840c front panel detail

Using modular building blocks, the 7U Dell MX7000 chassis supports several different server nodes in the same chassis for high-performance, database workloads, and mission critical applications. The MX7000 chassis supports the power, cooling, networking and management of the system while the server nodes provide the compute, memory, and storage for a kinetic, highly adaptable infrastructure. Several compute nodes are supported, including the Dell EMC PowerEdge MX840c server offering 4-socket performance with support for NVDIMM and datacentric persistent memory modules (Intel Optane) for up to 15.36TB of memory per server node. A total of 8x Dell EMC PowerEdge MX740c or up to 4x of the double-width Dell MX840c servers, or a combination of the two can be installed depending on your business needs.

Performance

2x or 4x 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 cores are supported using Intel’s C628 chipset with optional Intel QuickAssist Technology (QAT). Each processor supports 6x memory channels, but all 4x processors are required to access the full memory and PCIe bandwidth.

Memory

There is a total of 48x DIMM slots on the system board with each processor in charge of 6x memory channels with 12x memory module slots and 2x DIMMs per channel. DDR4 load reduced (LRDIMM), registered (RDIMM) and non-volatile (NVDIMM) memory modules are supported offering memory speeds of up to 2933 MT/s. LRDIMMs will provide up to 6TB of memory while RDIMM memory modules will deliver up to 3TB of memory. Data centric persistent memory modules (like Intel Optane) are supported and provide the highest memory density at up to 15.36TB. Non-volatile (NVDIMM) memory modules are also supported at speeds of up to 2666 MT/s and a maximum capacity of 192GB, but they do require a battery as a power source in the event of a power failure.

Storage

PowerEdge MX840c rear ports

There are 8x SAS/SATA/NVMe storage bays on the front of the server node supported by a hybrid backplane. However, if you install NVDIMM memory only 6x of the 8x storage bays are active. The system features an integrated S140 controller with software RAID capabilities, but if you plan on implementing SAS storage or need more control over your storage a selection of PowerEdge RAID Controllers (PERC) are supported, including the H730, H754P, and HBA330 storage controllers. An optional M.2 boot optimized storage subsystem, or BOSS, can be used to support the OS.

Expansion

As mentioned above, there are options for hardware HD/RAID controllers which will take up one of the 4x PCIe 3.0 x16 mezzanine slots at the back of the server sled. The mezzanine cards selected will connect to either Fabric A or Fabric B with a Fabric C connection reserved for external storage.

Management

Each server sled incorporates Dell’s integrated remote access controller with Lifecycle Controller, or iDRAC, for at-chassis and remote management of the system. iDRAC works in conjunction with OpenManage Enterprise for modular and embedded systems and includes additional tools for inventory and alerting. .

Summary

Dell’s MX7000 chassis delivers a modular easily scalable enclosure for support of your business needs. Optional server sleds like the Dell EMC PowerEdge MX840c server node and the MX740c provide the compute and memory while the enclosure provides the basic needs of power, cooling, networking and systems management. This system is scalable and adaptable to your changing business needs.
