Gigabyte G242-Z11 GPU Server - System Overview

Description

G242-Z11 front panel

The Gigabyte G242-Z11 GPU server is designed for complex workloads like AI, AI inference, AI training, plus financial and scientific simulation and modeling. AMD’s EPYC processor delivers up to 64x cores plus support for up to 4x double-wide GPU accelerators, and a PCIe 4.0 bus offering 2x the bandwidth compared to PCIe 3.0. Two 1600W PLUS Platinum redundant PSUs provide power to the system.

1x AMD EPYC 7002/7003 CPU, 4x PCIe Gen3 x16 GPUs, 1TB memory, 8x DDR4 DIMM, 4x 3.5" SATA, 2x 2.5" NVMe/SAS/SATA

Performance

A single AMD EPYC 7003-series (code name Milan), or 7002-series CPU, is supported offering a thermal design point (TDP) of up to 280W for high-performance computing applications. All processors also support PCIe 4.0 in all slots and 8x memory channels. The third generation “Milan” processors offer a 19% increase in general performance over the second-generation “Rome” processors.

Memory

G242-Z11 rear view ports

With 8x memory channels provided by the EPYC series processor this system has 8x memory module slots total for a single memory module per memory channel. Standard registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules will provide up to 1TB of memory, while 3DS RDIMM and LRDIMM modules will provide double that value at 2TB using 256GB modules in all 8x slots.

Storage

Four 3.5-inch SATA storage devices line the front of the G242-Z11 Server. Only SATA drives are supported in the front storage bays, however, a rear mounted storage cage will support SAS, SATA or U.2 NVMe drive formats, but a SAS controller is required for support of the SAS drives in back.

Expansion

Three GPU cages just behind the front panel, and one in back provide x16 PCIe 4.0 slots for support of up to 4x GPU accelerators from Nvidia, AMD, XiLink or Qualcomm. Two more full-height, half-length cards can be populated in PCIe Gen 4.0 x16 slots to provide options for high-performance I/O cards or support of SAS drives in the rear mounted drive cage. The system also features a dedicated slot for support of an open compute project (OCP) 3.0 card, which supports PCIe 4.0 speeds and can be easily switched without tools and without removing the server cover.

Management

Like Gigabyte’s other systems in this family, there are two proprietary management applications that are offered free of charge. Gigabyte Management Console is used for managing a single server, and Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) for managing multiple servers. Both provide remote real-time remote control and management of the system, plus inventory and troubleshooting. Furthermore, GSM is compatible with IPMI and Redfish standards for compatibility with other third-party manufacturers.

Summary

Offering support for a single AMD EPYC 7002/7003 CPU and up to 4x double width GPUs, the Gigabyte G242-Z11 GPU server is only 2U and can support a number of high-performance workloads. With only a single CPU, this system will also help save on costs in the data center that may be contingent on the number of sockets. It offers mid-level density for AI, AI training, AI inference, plus scientific simulation and modeling.
