Gigabyte R272-Z34 Server - System Overview

Description

As one of 8x servers in the Gigabyte R272 family, the Gigabyte R272-Z34 also supports only a single CPU. in this case it supports a single AMD EPYC processor from the 7003 or 7002 series family. It provides fast results with its PCIe Gen 4.0 compatibility and 16x memory module slots supporting up to 4TB of memory, depending on the type of DIMMs installed. This machine holds components for competitive modern data centers and paves the way for success.

Performance

The G272-Z32 platform supports a single AMD EPYC 7003 series processor and is also compatible with CPUs from the 7002 series family. Built on a 7nm architecture process, the 3rd Gen CPU, codenamed “Milan,” delivers the highest possible I/O throughput for fast communication between the CPU and demanding workloads. This processor, which has up to 64 cores and 128 threads, and the memory modules and PCIe slots are cooled by Gigabyte's intelligent fan speed control, which dynamically adjusts with 4x separate fan speeds based on temperature sensors located throughout the server.

Memory

Surrounding the AMD “Milan” processor are 8x memory channels, each supporting 2x DIMMs per channel, for a total of 16x active memory modules slots. When all slots are populated with 256GB 3DS RDIMM or LRDIMM memory modules, up to 4TB are supported. However, only a maximum of 2TB are supported using standard RDIMM or LDRIMM modules with a top capacity of 128GB. The memory speed ranges from 2933MHz to 3200MHz and is determined by the number and type of DIMMs installed.

Storage

The front of the chassis holds 24x 2.5" Gen4 U.2 NVMe hot-swappable SSD bays labeled by lime green tabs on the drive trays. The storage devices operate with a GRAID SupremeRAID card to free up resources on the CPU and providing the best performance possible. There are an additional two 2.5″ SATA/SAS hot-swap bays in the rear which can be used for OS boot devices. Dual M.2 slots on the motherboard, can also be used to boot the system.

Expansion

This system uses a mix of Gen3 and Gen4 expansion slots on the motherboard. A total of 6x low-profile PCIe slots can be accessed through the back of the chassis. To the left of the slots are dual 1GbE LAN ports and a dedicated MLAN port for IPMI support. The system also supports an OCP 2.0 mezzanine slot with a PCIe Gen3 x16 interface.

Management

Gigabyte offers two free-of-charge management applications via the Aspeed AST2500 controller module on the system board. Administrators can use the Gigabyte Management Console, which is pre-installed on each server. Users can monitor and manage a single server or a small cluster through a browser-based interface. Similarly, the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) software can manage a cluster of servers or a large cluster over the internet and also provides a full suite of management utilities.

Summary

With the Gigabyte R272-Z34, one gets 24x Gen4 U.2 NVMe bays on the front panel, dual M.2 boot drives to support the OS, and an additional two rear SATA/SAS drives. Outfitted with up to 4TB of memory when all 16x memory module slots are populated, this system is perfect for networking applications with next-generation capabilities.
