With the updated S5642AGM3NRE-2T motherboard needed to support the larger socket for support of the 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable processor, PCie 4.0 is supported offering twice the throughput of PCIe 3.0. Instead of only 6x memory channels supported by previous generation Xeon Scalable processors, the 3rd generation provides 8x memory channels for increased memory density.
There are 4x memory module slots to either side of the single processor socket, for a total of 8x. With 8x memory channels to work with, each memory module occupies a single memory channel for maximum bandwidth. Registered (RDIMM) and Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules are supported, but for maximum capacity potential, 3DS RDIMMs and LRDIMM memory modules will provide up to 2TB with all slots loaded with 256GB memory modules.
Options for storage on this system include the whole range of SAS, SATA and NVMe U.2 storage formats. The front of the Tyan Thunder HX FT65TB5642 B5642F65TV8E2H-2T-N workstation features 8x 3.5-inch hot-swap drive bays in the lower portion, with 2x smaller 2.5-inch drive bays just above those. The 3.5-inch bays, with dark blue drive release tabs, can be outfitted with either SATA, natively, or SAS using a discrete SAS controller in one of the PCIe slots. The 2.5-inch bays have light blue tabs indicating support for NVMe U.2 drive formats. There is a SlimSAS 8x connector for 2x native NVMe support. All drive trays have a tool-less design making it easy to install or replace drives. 2x PCIe 3.0 x4 slots on the system board can be outfitted with NVMe M.2 drive types. Additional NVMe storage drives can be installed via the PCIe 4.0 expansion slots.
A legacy VGA port on the back of the system provide resolutions up to 1920x1200, but a GPU is recommended in one of the 2x PCIe 4.0 x16 slots directly supported by the CPU. The system can support 2x full-height, full-width (FHFW) GPUs in slots 5 and 6. Slot 2 activated via MUX has a Gen4 PCIe x8 slot while slot 3 provides a x8 PCIe 4.0 link and x16 Slot. The #4 slot is a x8 PCIe 4.0 with a x4 link. One of minor the differences between this system and the FT65TB5642 B5642F65TV8E2H-G workstation tower is the inclusion of a 1x 1GbE port and 2x RJ45 10GbE and on the back of the system instead of 2x 1GbE ports. Both offer a 1GbE management LAN port.
A control panel on the front where the on/off button resides, also supports a number of LED status lights for LAN ports 1-3, plus an IPMI LED, HDD LED, and ID LED if you plan on rack mounting this system. It also features the Aspeed AST 2500 baseboard management controller (BMC) for at-chassis and remote monitoring and troubleshooting of the system.
