Cisco UCS B480 M5 Server Blade - System Overview

Description

Cisco UCS B480 M5 Server Blade front

Cisco's Unified Computing System helps reduce the complexity of server deployment with a unified fabric and fabric-extender technology, which also reduces the number of physical components. The Cisco B480 M5 can be used in either a dual or quad processor configuration and can be outfitted with up to four Gold or Platinum Scalable processors. The UCS 5108 Blade Server Chassis will also support earlier generation blade servers from M1 through M5.

Performance

You can install either 2x or 4x Intel Xeon Scalable processors from either the first or second generation. For maximum capacity of up to 18TB you will need 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors paired with a combination of Load-Reduced and Optane memory modules. Outfitted with 3DS LRDIMM or 3DS RDIMM memory modules will support up to 16TB of memory. Each processor supports six memory channels.

Memory

Memory will run at 2933MHz using 2nd generation processors or 2667MHz using 1st generation processors. Although, memory speed is dependent on the supported memory speed of the CPU, speed of the memory modules, and in some cases the configuration. Each processor supports 12x memory modules in six memory channels for a total of 48 active memory module slots with both processors installed.

Storage

Storage on this system is minimal with four front mounted 2.5-inch drive bays that support SAS, SATA or NVMe drives. Two drives each are mounted in two separate combination drive cage/RAID controllers that plug into two front PCIe mezzanine slots. NVMe drives require an NVMe drive tray/controller. Other configurations do not include storage as part of a vSAN.

Expansion

Cisco UCS B480 M5 Server Blade rear detail

There are five mezzanine slots on the system board with two in front and three in the rear. The two in front slots support the 2x drive trays as described above. They can also be used to support two Nvidia GPUs with an additional two in the back mezzanine slots for a total of 4x GPUs. Network connections are handled at the chassis through either Fabric Extenders or Fabric Interface modules that connect to the server node through a Virtual Interface Connection add on card mounted in a dedicated slot on the system board.

Management

Management of the system is through Cisco's Unified Computing System Manager or just the UCS Manager. Auto-discovery of server nodes helps streamline and automate deployment of servers. The UCS Manager provides a single interface for support of all hardware assets. An assortment of other management tools provide more granular control over the system.

Summary

Blade servers in general offer a higher cost of entry but a quicker ROI plus ease of management. The Cisco UCS B480 M5 Server Blade is part of Cisco's latest-generation server family offering support for both 1st and 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. This server node is designed for extreme virtualization, and demanding database workloads.
