Dell EMC PowerEdge MX740c Server Node - System Overview

Description

Dell PowerEdge MX740C server front detail

The MX7000 chassis is a 7U appliance designed to support several different compute nodes in the same chassis and will support up to 8x Dell EMC PowerEdge MX740c server sleds. This new chassis is not necessarily a replacement for Dell’s M1000e modular blade chassis offering an easy to expand modular platform that could easily scale with additional server nodes or full chassis, but it does offer similar characteristics. The Dell EMC PowerEdge MX7000 chassis features what Dell calls a kinetic infrastructure, and lacking a mid plane, it is better able to support innovative new features as they become available. Featuring a composable architecture the MX7000 chassis will support several different generations, blade types, and workload configurations providing a high level of flexibility. Other Server Sleds Supported on the MX7000 Chassis MX840c – 4-socket compute node, plus 16x 2.5-inch bays Storage Sled – Up to 16x direct attached 12Gb/s SAS storage

Performance

The Dell PowerEdge MX740c is a full width server node supporting dual Intel Xeon scalable processors up to 205W and 28 cores each. Each processor also supports 6X memory channels in 12x slots. Cooling and power are handled at the chassis level with 5x rear fans and four front mounted fans, plus up to 6x 3000W PSUs. A total of 8x Dell MX740c server sleds can be supported in a single MX7000 chassis.

Memory

With 12x DDR4 memory module slots per processor, there are 24x active memory module slots in a 2x processor configuration. Using Registered (RDIMM) memory modules, the sled will support up to 1.5TB or 3TB using load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules. Up to 6TB of persistent memory modules are supported too, for a maximum of 7.68TB per server node, when paired with RDIMM memory modules.

Storage

Six 2.5-inch storage bays on the front of the system can support either SATA, SAS or up to 6x NVMe PCIe SSD drives. There are also options for a dual M.2 PCIe card for a boot drive and a dual SD card module for support of a hypervisor.

Expansion

Several different PowerEdge I/O modules mount in the back of the MX7000 chassis offering optimal I/O performance for a variety of applications.

Management

Management of the system is handled by OpenManage Enterprise Modular edition at the chassis level, but each individual server sled is also accessible through the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller or iDRAC 9.0. iDRAC provides an intuitive browser-based interface to monitor and control various systems on the server node. The OpenManage Enterprise Modular applications provides an overview of system assets and the ability to drill down for more granular data.

Summary

As the newest member of Dell’s modular composable infrastructures, the Dell PowerEdge MX7000 chassis and Dell EMC PowerEdge MX740c server sleds are a perfect fit for a growing business. With flexible compute and storage options, you can easily scale to support a variety of different workloads. The MX7000 chassis is also future-ready for next generation servers plus vSAN ready nodes.
