Performance

As a dual root server, which splits the GPUs between the two CPUS, both CPUs are required for maximum performance and efficiency in a large-scale deployment. However, with optional configurations provided by the PCIe switches, the system can also be used as a single root server for small business applications. First- and second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors are supported offering a PCIe 3.0 bus for support of expansion cards and data centric persistent memory modules to support a maximum capacity of just under 4TB of memory.

Memory

Load reduced (LRDIMM) and registered (RDIMM) memory modules are supported in different quantities, but cannot be mixed. Data centric persistent memory modules, also under the Intel Optane umbrella, are supported offering data resiliency and can be used as either memory or additional storage. Memory speeds will range from 2933/2666/2400/2133 MHz depending on the supported memory speed of the CPUs, memory modules, and the memory configuration. However, the top memory speed of 2933MHz is only achieved using second generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors.

Storage

This system offers hybrid storage with a bank of 10x 2.5-inch storage bays on top and 12x more 3.5-inch bays on the lower portion of the chassis. The upper bays on the G481-HA0 server have both amber and blue hard drive release tabs, with amber storage bays indicating support for NVMe and also SATA or SAS formats. Blue release tabs indicate support for SATA or SAS hot swappable drive formats, only. This system ships with an Intel virtual RAID on CPU (vROC) module, standard, for support of NVMe storage devices and offers limited RAID. A Broadcom SAS3008 storage adapter with expander board provides RAID for both SAS and SATA storage devices.

Expansion

All expansion slots support PCIe 3.0. Ten of the PCIe 3.0 x16 slots at the back of the chassis are designated for support of double-width GPU accelerators from AMD or Nvidia. There are 2x more low-profile, half-length PCIe 3.0 slots at the back of the chassis. One of those slots is occupied by the pre-installed Broadcom SAS308 controller offering 8x SAS ports and RAID of 0/1/1E/10. The other port can be used for a high-performance I/O controller, or other options.

Management

Other than third-party options, Gigabyte offers several no-cost management applications. Gigabyte Management Console uses the AMI MegaRAC SP-X solution for BMC server management, which features RESTful API support, and HTML5 based iKVM remote management client, detailed inventory, recording and SAS/RAID controller monitoring among other things. For multiple server management there’s the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) application, available as a free download and includes several subprograms that are easily interpreted using the graphical user interface. To utilize GSM each of the servers require the GSM Agent. GSM is compatible with IPMI 2.0 and Redfish connection interfaces. There is also a mobile app called GSM Mobile for Android and iOS operating systems.

Summary

In summary, the Gigabyte G481-HA0 GPU server offers support for up to 10x Nvidia Tesla A100, V100, and Nvidia Quadro families, plus the AMD instinct MI100 GPU accelerators. Outfitted with Intel Xeon Scalable processors it can also support up to 56 processing cores and 112 virtual threads to tackle complex computing applications in AI, AI training, AI inference and a number of high-performance computing applications. At 4U it also features 22x front drive bays divided between 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors with support for NVMe, SAS, and SATA drive formats. This server uses a PCIe 3.0 bus and supports both single and dual root configurations.
