The HP Z420 workstation is a mid-range single socket workstation and features ISV certification for applications in data analysis, CAD, 3d animation, and oil and gas exploration, to name a few. This system features the reliability and enterprise performance you would expect from HP.
Workstations are designed to perform more reliably than a typical PC with CPU’s and memory that feature error correcting code, high performance graphics cards, and ISV certification that ensures the top software programs have been rigorously tested to run reliably. The Z420 is a solid workstation that performs very well at an affordable cost.
The HP Z420 is ISV certified to perform effortlessly running intensive software applications used by design professionals, financial analysts, and geologists. ISV is an acronym for Independent Software Vendor, This means independent software vendors have tested the software, hardware, and components to ensure stable and reliable performance.
The Intel C622 chipset supports a single processor. Users can choose from several Xeon E5-1600 or E5-1600 v2 processors with up to eight cores or just two E5-2600 v2 chips including a workstation specific CPU which supports eight cores. Transfer speeds are either 1866MT/s, 1600MT/s or 1066MT/s. Most of the available processors support Intel vPro Technology, which includes hyper-threading and Intel Turbo Boost.
The single processor supports eight DIMM slots total in four channels for a maximum of 64GB of memory using 8GB DDR3 ECC unbuffered memory modules. Keep in mind, the CPU will determine the speed at which the memory is clocked. To obtain memory speeds of 1866MHz requires both processor and memory to support this speed. Memory speed will default to the slowest performer between memory modules and CPUs.
Up to four drives total can be installed on the system with the fourth drive occupying the top 5.25-inch media bay and will require an external bay adapter to support an HDD. Both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA, SAS Self-encrypting, and Hybrid HDDs and SSDs are supported on the Z420. There’s also a removable boot drive option and support for optional PCIe Solid State Drives with up to 512GB using a HP Z Turbo Drive SSD. You have options for hard drive controllers starting with the integrated SATA 6.0 Gb/s Controller and factory integrated RAID on the motherboard for SATA drives. For RAID support on Linux systems all drives must be identical in type and capacity. PCIe SSDs cannot be used in a boot RAID configuration.
The system supports Windows and Linux operating systems, which offer configuration and management options. Intel’s Active Management System 9.1 and the HP Performance Advisor to help configure your system for use with your preferred software platform. The system can also be accessed remotely.
There are 6 PCI slots total, including three PCIe 3.0, two PCIe2.0, and a legacy PCI slot. Here again you have options for increased performance and IO with a range of supported GPUs from both Nvidia and AMD supporting applications from professional 2D graphics, entry level, mid-range, and high-end 3D graphic rendering using either Nvidia Quadro or AMD FirePro graphics cards. At the high end Nvidia’s Quadro K6000 and AMD’s FirePro W7000 are supported. Tesla K20 and K40 compute processors can also be installed bt require additional supported graphics cards and hardware kits.
There’s also support for up to eight displays but that will require two graphics cards that support four monitors each. Other options are PCIe M.2 NVMe drives for super-fast storage, Audio cards, Ethernet and HD controllers. There are also several USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports for connecting additional external devices. Power is supplied by either a 400W 90% efficient or 600W 90% efficient power supply unit. The 600W PSU is recommended when installing more than one graphics card or to support multiple expansion slots.
The Z440 is an excellent choice for performance and budget. It offers performance and expansion options at a reasonable price point that should more than satisfy the vast majority of professional workstation users. Lastly, while this system is quiet, to make it even more so an optional liquid cooling solution is recommended.
