The Lenovo ThinkStation P520 Workstation Tower is a single-socket platform that provides plenty of power for AutoCAD, 3D animation, and VR. It's highly dependable and adaptable with a bunch of optional components to address your unique workstyle.
The Lenovo ThinkStation P520 Workstation Tower delivers single-socket performance ideal for SolidWorks applications, AutoCAD, animation, plus 2D and 3D design work. Lenovo's offers three premium tower workstations in their portfolio, which are consistent with the performance of the top three workstations offered by both Dell and HP. They include the ThinkStation P520, the ThinkStation P720, and the top of the line, ThinkStation P920 workstations. The other two systems, the P720 and P920, offer dual Intel Scalable processors, while the P520 delivers a single-socket outfitted with an Intel Xeon W processor specifically designed for workstation applications. Another option is Lenovo's P520c, the “C” refers to the compact dimensions, as it is somewhat smaller and supports slightly less performance than the full-size P520.

A single Intel's Xeon W family processor with up to 18 cores is supported with Intel's C422 chipset. Although, don't let that concern you because you can still install a maximum of two high-performance graphics cards from Nvidia including two Quadro P6000 cards. If it can support the P6000, it can support anything else in Nvidia's arsenal of GPUs. The Xeon W processors support four memory channels.
Storage on this system is also quite impressive with four internal drive bays and two 5.25-inch front media bays that can each be converted to support a single 2.5 or3.5-inch drive. Two slots on the motherboard are provided for NVMe M.2 drives for super-fast storage or they can be used as a boot device and RAIDed together for redundancy. In total, the system can be outfitted with up to nine M.2 drives with two on the system board, four on a PCIe card in a x16 slot, and three additional in the PCIe x4 slots with an adapter for each. All M.2 devices can be RAIDed with an optional NVMe RAID upgrade. The system will support SAS, SATA, and NVMe drive types but only SATA natively. An integrated onboard HD controller provides support for SATA drives only at 6Gb/s and offers RAID configurations with AHCI (Advanced host Controller Interface), which allows the system to support hot-swap for Windows, Unix, and Linux operating systems. Supported M.2 PCIe NVMe devices can also be RAIDed using an optional Intel NVMe PCIe upgrade, either basic or premium. Two optional Broadcom PCIe supported controllers provide support for SATA and SAS at 12Gb/s with RAID support.
With four memory channels and a total of eight DIMM sockets, each memory channel can support two memory modules. Only Registered memory modules are supported for a maximum memory count of 256GB using 32GB RDIMM modules that can operate at up to 2666MHz depending on your choice of processor and memory configuration.
On the Lenovo P520 Workstation system board, there are five PCIe 3.0 slots and a single PCI slot, and since there is only a single processor, all are active. As indicated above, the system can support a maximum of two Nvidia P6000 graphics cards but will require the 900W PSU. Out of the entire list of supported GPUs, LSI is only supported with the Nvidia P5000 graphics card. Other expansion options include additional M.2 storage, Thunderbolt, optional controllers, and network interface cards (NICs).
In the event your system does experience problems, Lenovo Diagnostics can help you pinpoint the problem and keep it running at peak performance. Lenovo's Performance Tuner is free to download and helps you get the most performance out of the ISV (Independent Software Vendor) certified applications. You can run the Lenovo Vantage app to ensure all your drivers are up to date, and there is also a setting within the app that lets you change the fan settings from Performance Mode to Quiet Mode if your system is too loud.
The Lenovo ThinkStation P520 workstation tower offers considerable performance across a range of ISV certified applications. Intel's Xeon W processors supports impressive memory, storage, and expansion options to ensure the best possible performance for your unique workstyle. Certain models are also power sippers designed to save you money without compromising performance.
